The Kvarken Archipelago on Finland’s west coast is the kind of place that makes you slow down and really savour the nature around you. Silence and water, low northern vegetation, and a landscape where birch forests give way to water at almost every step. It’s no surprise this archipelago is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Together with Sweden’s High Coast, it forms the shared High Coast–Kvarken Archipelago site.
From this unique region we opt for an easy loop around Lake Bodvattnet on the island of Björkö, the Bodvattnet Nature Trail—an ideal short hike that’s easy to do with a dog.
Getting to Björkö

You reach the island of Björkö via the Raippaluoto Bridge, Finland’s longest bridge. It links the mainland to the Kvarken Archipelago and, even as you cross, it’s clear you’re entering a different world—one of water, islands and low horizons.
Kvarken lies in the Gulf of Bothnia and is made up of thousands of islands, rocky skerries and shallows. The region’s defining feature is post-glacial land uplift—the land here is still rising, and each year new patches of land quite literally emerge. This geological process is the main reason the area is on the UNESCO list.
Bodvattnet Loop
With Ibo, we set off on the short loop around Lake Bodvattnet. It’s a well-marked nature trail—there’s virtually no way to get lost. Most of the route is flat, with no real climbs or descents, making it a perfect outing for an “easy day”.

The lakeshore is fringed with overgrown coves, wetlands and birch—birch is everywhere you look. In several places the lake’s edge is fenced, which makes wayfinding easier and adds a bit of safety, especially when walking with a dog.
Along the way you’ll come to a lookout tower with a fine view over the lake and surrounding wetlands. It’s a great spot for a short break and some birdwatching—Kvarken is known for its abundance of waterbirds and migratory species.
Why go
Bodvattnet on Björkö is exactly the kind of place where it’s not about performance or big challenges. It’s about calm, quiet and being close to nature. The short, easy loop is ideal for a walk with a dog, an easy stop on a road trip or a pleasant break while exploring the Kvarken Archipelago.
