The Kvarken Archipelago on Finland’s west coast is one of those places that make you slow down and really savor the surrounding nature. Silence, water, low northern vegetation and a landscape where birch forests alternate with bodies of water almost at every step. Perhaps that’s also why this archipelago is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with the Swedish coast it forms the combined area High Coast – Kvarken Archipelago.
From this unique region we choose an easy loop around Lake Bodvattnet on the island of Björkö called the Bodvattnet Nature Trail – an ideal short trek that is easily manageable even with a dog.
Getting to Björkö

You reach the island of Björkö via the Raippaluoto Bridge, which is also the longest bridge in Finland. It connects the mainland with the Kvarken Archipelago and already during the crossing makes it clear that you are entering a different world – a world of water, islands and low horizons.
Kvarken lies in the Gulf of Bothnia and is made up of thousands of islands, rocky cliffs and shallows. A unique feature of the region is post-glacial land uplift – the land here is continuously rising and literally new patches of dry land appear every year. This geological process is the main reason the area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Bodvattnet Loop
With Ibo we set off on the aforementioned short loop around Lake Bodvattnet. It is a nature trail that is very well marked – there’s practically no way to get lost. Most of the route runs on flat ground, without significant ascents or descents, so it is an ideal outing even for an “easy day”.

The lake is surrounded by overgrown bays, wetlands and birches – they are everywhere you look. The lake’s edge is fenced in several places, which further simplifies orientation and increases safety, especially when walking with a dog.
Along the trail you will also find a lookout tower that offers a nice view of the lake and the surrounding wetlands. It’s a great place for a short break and birdwatching – Kvarken is known for its rich presence of waterfowl and migratory species.
Why visit
