A short escape from the capital to the green and hilly part of Paraguay, combining hiking, jungle, views, and unexpected gastronomic surprises. This two-day itinerary takes us to the Ybytyruzú Mountains and the area around the city of Villarrica.

This itinerary is ideal for travelers who want to escape busy Asunción for a short time and head to the green, more mountainous part of Paraguay. Over two days, we’ll discover the highest point in the country, the tropical jungle of the Ybytyruzú Mountains, and the surprisingly strong European gastronomic heritage around Villarrica.

Day 1 – From Asunción to General Eugenio A. Garay and climbing Cerro Tres Kandú

Early morning departure from Asunción

It’s best to leave in the early morning hours (around 6:00 AM). A roughly three-hour drive awaits us through the city of Villarrica, where we’ll stop for a quick refreshment, before continuing to the village of General Eugenio A. Garay. Along the way, we’ll gradually leave the urban landscape behind and enjoy views of green hills and plantations.

Climbing Paraguay’s highest peak – Cerro Tres Kandú (842 m)

From General Eugenio A. Garay, continue to the start of the hike up Cerro Tres Kandú, the highest point in Paraguay. The trail leads through the forest, over rocky sections, and is secured with ropes and steps in some places. The climb takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on your pace.

The reward is beautiful views of the rolling landscape of the Ybytyruzú Mountains and the feeling of standing on the roof of Paraguay.

Accommodation and dinner in the jungle

After returning from the hike, we’ll move to a nearby hotel – a small resort surrounded by jungle. A swimming pool, peaceful environment, and dinner made from local ingredients are the perfect end to a physically demanding day.

Day 2 – Cerro Akatí, views, and German cuisine

Breakfast and drive

After breakfast, there’s a shorter drive towards Cerro Akatí. The road leads through hilly countryside and small villages where life still moves at a slower pace.

Trek to Cerro Akatí

Cerro Akatí is one of the lesser-known but very photogenic peaks in the region. The climb is shorter and less technically demanding than the previous day – it’s practically more of an easy walk. Wide views of green valleys and surrounding hills open up from the top, perfect for morning photography.

Lunch at a “German” restaurant near Villarrica

After the hike, we’ll move to the nearby colonies with German heritage. Local restaurants offer a combination of Paraguayan flavors and Central European cuisine – sausages, roasted meat, homemade cakes, and beer.

Return to Asunción

After lunch, we’ll head back to Asunción. The journey takes about 3–4 hours and is the perfect time to recap your experiences from one of Paraguay’s most beautiful natural regions.

Practical tips

  • The best time for the trip is during the drier months when the access roads are more easily passable.
  • Sturdy hiking boots and plenty of water are a must.
  • Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit – the pool after the hike will come in handy.

This two-day itinerary is proof that even Paraguay offers surprisingly diverse mountain and hiking experiences available for a short trip from the capital.
