The good news when traveling with a dog is that it’s an EU member state, so if you’re coming from another EU country the familiar rules apply: microchip, valid rabies vaccination, and an EU Pet Passport.

If your dog is arriving in Greece from outside the EU, the rules are stricter. You’ll need to handle entry into the European Union itself: a health certificate, a possible rabies antibody (titer) test, and arrival through an approved point of entry.

This article covers ordinary, non‑commercial travel with a dog accompanying its owner or a designated person. If a dog travels as cargo, for sale, for a change of ownership, or as part of a larger number of animals, different rules may apply.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_83 class="ez-toc-section" id="Quick_overview">Quick overview

When taking a dog to Greece, the key factor is where the dog is coming from.

If you’re traveling from another EU country, your dog needs:

a microchip, or a readable tattoo applied before 3 July 2011,

a valid rabies vaccination,

a minimum 21‑day wait after the first rabies vaccination,

EU Pet Passport.

If the dog is coming from a non‑EU country, you’ll also need:

a veterinary health certificate for entry into the EU,

a declaration that the movement is non‑commercial,

entry via an approved point of entry for travelers with pets,

a rabies antibody (titer) test – a blood test that checks antibody levels after vaccination – if required by the EU for the country of departure.

Greece is not among the countries that require mandatory echinococcus treatment on entry. This requirement mainly applies to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway and Northern Ireland.

Entry requirements for taking a dog to Greece from an EU country

If you’re coming to Greece from another EU country, your trip falls under the EU’s harmonized rules for dogs, cats and ferrets.

Your dog must have:

a microchip,

a valid rabies vaccination,

EU Pet Passport.

The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination. If the dog was vaccinated before being microchipped, that vaccination may not count for travel.

After the first rabies vaccination there’s a minimum 21‑day waiting period before it’s considered valid for travel. If boosters are given on time, the 21‑day wait does not apply.

The EU Pet Passport is the dog’s core travel document within the EU. It records the dog’s identification, owner details, rabies vaccination, and any other veterinary entries.

Entering Greece with a dog from a non‑EU country

If a dog is arriving in Greece from a non‑EU country, it’s entering the European Union. You’ll need to prepare not only the trip to Greece, but also the EU‑required documents for bringing dogs, cats and ferrets in from third countries.

Your dog must have:

a microchip,

a valid rabies vaccination,

a veterinary health certificate for entry into the EU,

a declaration that the movement is non‑commercial,

a rabies antibody (titer) test if required for the country of departure.

The veterinary health certificate is issued by the official veterinarian in the country of departure. On entry to the EU it’s valid for 10 days from the date of issue. Within that period, the dog must pass checks at an approved point of entry—such as an airport, port, or land border crossing. For sea travel, this deadline is extended by the duration of the voyage.

After a successful check on entry to the EU, the certificate can also be used for onward movement within the EU for up to 4 months, or until the rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first.

When a rabies antibody (titer) test is required

A titer test is required when entering the EU from countries the EU does not consider low‑risk for rabies.

In practice, this means that from some non‑EU countries, a microchip, a rabies vaccination, and a health certificate are enough, while from others, a titer test is also required.

The test is done on a blood sample in an approved laboratory and must follow a valid rabies vaccination. If you’re traveling to Greece from outside the EU, always check in advance whether the EU requires a titer test for your country of departure.

If a dog leaves the EU for a non‑EU country and will return to Greece or elsewhere in the EU, check whether the EU requires a titer test for re‑entry from that country. If a test is required for your route, it’s practical to do it before leaving the EU and have the result recorded in the EU Pet Passport. As long as the rabies vaccination does not lapse, this can make returning to the EU much easier.

Where checks take place when entering from a non‑EU country

If a dog is entering Greece from outside the EU, it must arrive through an approved point of entry for travelers with pets. This is where documents and the dog’s identity are checked.

For air travel, this usually means the airport where you first arrive in Greece. For sea travel, it may be a port; for land travel, an approved border crossing. Before your trip, confirm that the place you intend to use is designated as an approved point of entry for pets.

If you enter the EU through a country other than Greece and only then continue to Greece, the check takes place in the first EU country on your route. The onward journey to Greece is then considered movement within the EU.

Document checks when traveling to Greece with a dog

Documents may be checked by border or veterinary authorities, carriers, ferry companies or airlines. Accommodation providers can also set their own conditions for stays with dogs, such as fees, size limits, or rules for shared areas.

Have the following ready when you travel:

proof of the dog’s identification,

an EU Pet Passport or a veterinary health certificate,

evidence of a valid rabies vaccination,

the titer test result, if required for your route,

any confirmations or forms required by your carrier.

Even within the EU, carriers may have their own rules. For flights, ferries, buses or rental cars, check them before you buy tickets or book.

Practical guidelines for staying in Greece with a dog

Greece is an appealing destination with a dog, but it isn’t equally straightforward everywhere. Attitudes to dogs vary by region, season, type of accommodation and individual venue.

In tourist areas you’ll find more dog‑friendly accommodation, but always confirm the rules directly. Check size limits, any fees, whether you can leave the dog alone in the room, and rules for shared spaces.

In cafés and restaurants it’s usually easier to sit on the terrace than indoors. On the islands and in smaller towns policies can be case‑by‑case. Ask staff and keep your dog close so it doesn’t disturb other guests.

For ferries, check the rules for the specific company and vessel. Some ferries have designated areas for dogs; others allow dogs on deck only under certain conditions. For longer crossings, find out in advance whether you can access your dog during the trip.

On beaches the situation depends on the location and the season. On organized beaches with loungers, beach bars and more people, dogs can be an issue. It’s usually easier outside peak season, early in the morning, in the evening, or on quieter stretches of coast.

You may also encounter stray dogs and cats in Greece. Most situations are uneventful, but keep your dog under control and don’t let it run up to unfamiliar animals. Before you go, talk to your vet about protection against parasites and insect‑borne diseases.

When to start preparing

If you’re traveling from within the EU

If you’re coming to Greece from another EU country and your dog already has a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU Pet Passport, preparation is straightforward. Above all, check that the vaccination stays valid for your entire trip including the return, and review your carrier’s rules.

If you’re traveling from a non‑EU country

If your dog is coming from outside the EU, start earlier. Check whether you need a titer test, which health certificate is used, who issues it, and through which point you can enter Greece or the EU.

A titer test can’t be arranged at the last minute. The blood sample is taken no sooner than 30 days after the rabies vaccination. Processing times vary by laboratory and usually range from a few working days to several weeks. If the test is required for your route, take care of it well in advance.

Summary

Traveling to Greece with a dog is fairly straightforward when you’re coming from the EU. Mandatory echinococcus treatment is not required for entry to Greece.

If the dog is arriving from outside the EU, you’ll need to meet the EU’s entry rules: a health certificate, a declaration that the movement is non‑commercial, a possible titer test, and arrival via an approved point of entry.

Beyond the paperwork, think about the practical side of the trip.
