We head to the island of Dugi Otok, where we slow the pace and spend a week in the calm setting of Telašćica Nature Park.

The route and the stay are ideal if you’re traveling with a dog. Distances are manageable by car, and the island is quiet and off the main tourist track, making it very comfortable for four-legged companions.

This itinerary is based on our own experience. We visited the island in 2023 with our dog Ibo as part of a broader loop through the Balkans.

If Croatia isn’t quite on your doorstep, fly into Zadar. Airlines including Lufthansa, LOT, Austrian, Eurowings, Ryanair and others serve the airport. It’s easy to pair your flight with a rental car right in Zadar.

Day 1: Travel from Slovakia to Dugi Otok

We set off early from Slovakia, heading via Austria and Slovenia to the Croatian coast. En route, we stop at the source of the Cetina River, one of the most striking natural sights in the region.

On arrival in Zadar, we board the ferry to Dugi Otok, sailing to the port of Brbinj. The crossing takes around an hour and a half and naturally eases us into a slower rhythm.

After docking, we continue to a romantic place to stay in the Telašćica area, our base for the coming days. It’s a characterful yet fully restored winegrower’s cottage with an almost unreasonably large garden and countless spots to unwind. There’s also a fully equipped kitchenette and an outdoor grill.

Day 2: Telašćica and Lake Mir

We start gently and fall into the island’s rhythm.

We head into Telašćica Nature Park to visit Lake Mir—a saltwater lake separated from the sea. Then we continue to the cliffs that tower above the open Adriatic, among the island’s most dramatic scenes.

We end the day quietly, ideally with a glass of wine at one of the local restaurants.

Day 3: Uvala Orihovica – hidden cove

We set out to discover the island’s lesser-known places.

We make our way to Uvala Orihovica, one of the island’s less-visited bays. Access is a touch more demanding, which usually means just one thing—few people and maximum calm.

We spend the day by the sea, with no fixed plan.

Day 4: Brbišćica and Golubinka Cave

We cross to the island’s west, to the Brbišćica area.

It’s a rocky stretch of coast with swimming and the chance to explore Golubinka Cave. If you’re feeling active, rent a kayak and explore from the water.

In terms of scenery, this is one of the standout days.

Day 5: Sakarun and Veli žal

Today we visit the island’s best-known beaches.

We head to Sakarun Beach, famous for its shallow water and pale seabed. Afterwards, we continue to Veli žal, which offers a similar feel but is often quieter.

A day dedicated to seaside downtime.

Day 6: Veli Rat Lighthouse and the north of the island

We head to the island’s north.

We visit Veli Rat Lighthouse, one of the tallest on the Adriatic. The surroundings are quiet and less touristy, perfect for a short outing.

Along the way we can pause at small beaches and explore the island’s less-frequented corners.

Day 7: Strašna peć and the Grpašćak viewpoint

For the finale, we explore the island’s interior.

We visit Strašna peć Cave and then continue to the Grpašćak viewpoint, which offers one of the finest views of the cliffs and the open sea.

Sunset here is a fitting close to the trip.

Return

At the end of the stay, we take the ferry back to Zadar, then continue by car to Slovakia.

Trip summary

This itinerary is ideal for those looking for a quieter Croatia, away from the main tourist routes.

The mix of road trip, ferry crossing and island time creates a balanced plan—plenty to experience, yet ample room to unwind.

Dugi Otok isn’t about ticking off attractions. It’s about atmosphere, quiet, and places where there’s no need to rush.

If you’d like a similar itinerary tailored to you (with or without a dog), we’re happy to help plan it—from the route and accommodation to the practical details.

Itinerary overview

Duration: 7 days

Transport: car + ferry (Zadar – Brbinj)

Trip type: road trip + island stay

Highlights: Telašćica, Lake Mir, Uvala Orihovica, Brbišćica, Sakarun, Veli žal, Veli Rat, Strašna peć, Grpašćak

Dog-friendly: yes

Best time: May – September

Croatia is one of the easiest getaways from Slovakia, but this itinerary takes you well beyond the usual crowded beaches.
