After long drives on our Balkan road trip, we treated ourselves to a much quieter day. We set our sights on Savin Kuk (2313 m) in the Durmitor range\u2014an ascent the map promised would be much easier thanks to a cable car. Without overthinking it, we went for it.<\/p>\n\n

Cable car instead of a long climb<\/h2>\n\n

Savin Kuk is a well-known ski area in winter, and the infrastructure operates through summer as well. You can shorten the ascent considerably with a cable car that takes you up for about 10 \u20ac per person.<\/p>\n\n

We\u2019re not the only ones drawn to this comfort. At the upper station we meet a number of visitors, among them a Muslim family enthusiastically photographing the views. It\u2019s already clear this outing will be more about soaking up the views than about effort.<\/p>\n\n

From the cable car to the saddle<\/h2>\n

From the upper cable-car station (approx. 2175 m) it\u2019s about a ten-minute walk to a nearby saddle. The terrain is easy and the path obvious. There\u2019s even a small spring right beside the trail, which Ibo immediately used to cool off in the heat.<\/p>\n\n

There\u2019s plenty to admire at the saddle. From here, beautiful views open up over the surrounding landscape. The terrain is exposed in places, but the trail stays a safe distance from the steeper sections, so it feels secure even for less experienced hikers or when walking with a dog.<\/p>\n\n

From the saddle we continue for roughly another twenty minutes toward the summit of Savin Kuk.<\/p>\n\n

The final stretch<\/h2>\n\n

The last meters below the top wind up easy switchbacks across a grassy slope. The path is clear and technically undemanding. The ascent rewards us with far-reaching views and ideal weather that makes the day feel even better.<\/p>\n\n

From the summit of Savin Kuk, the best views are to the east over Durmitor\u2019s sharp forms and open high country. On the horizon, Bobotov Kuk (2522 m) clearly dominates\u2014the highest peak of the Durmitor range, often mistakenly thought to be the highest mountain in all of Montenegro.<\/p>\n\n

With the weather on our side, we linger on the summit and even squeeze in a quick drone flight. Eventually, hunger sends us back the way we came.<\/p>\n\n

An ideal hike with a dog<\/h2>\n\n

If you take the cable car, the ascent of Savin Kuk becomes a very easy hike with no tricky sections. It\u2019s suitable for dogs too\u2014an ideal mix of a short walk and great views.<\/p>\n\n

We recommend using a long hiking leash and a proper dog harness, especially on busier stretches.<\/p>\n\n

There are several local restaurants at the base of the cable car where you can reward yourselves after the hike with a good meal and something nicely chilled. Savin Kuk is exactly the kind of outing that doesn\u2019t wear you out, yet still leaves a great impression.<\/p>\n\n
